An art exhibition of paintings and drawings will be presented to highlight the career of William Gropper. On loan by special arrangement with the artist’s family, the thirty-plus pieces from their private collection will enhance our understanding of this great 20th century artist. Guided tours both of the Windows and the art exhibit will be offered to arts, architectural, and cultural organizations in the Chicago area.

Keynote Lecture:
“Art and Social Justice”
Professor Elizabeth Baer, Gustavus Adolphus College
Sunday, November 2nd at 2:00pm
We are honored to welcome Elizabeth Baer, Professor of English at Gustavus Adolphus College in Minnesota. Dr. Baer is a scholar on subjects as wide ranging as women’s issues, the Holocaust, and modern day war and conflict. The subject of her lecture, “Art and Social Justice”, is particularly appropriate as Mr. Gropper was dedicated to bringing attention to the plight of the common man through his paintings, drawings, and satirical cartoons. Opening remarks will be made by David Sokol of Oak Park, Professor Emeritus at University of Illinois at Chicago and dedicated advocate of the arts.

Champagne Reception and Gala Concert
Featuring Chicago a Capella
and a specially commissioned piece by composer Ilya Levinson
Saturday, November 8th at 7:00pm
The acclaimed group Chicago a Capella will perform at a unique music and light presentation showcasing the beautiful Gropper Windows. One by one, the windows will be illuminated as a musical selection is performed to match each window’s theme. A highlight of the evening will be an orchestral composition specially commissioned for the event. Prior to the performance, guests will sip champagne and sample gourmet hors d’oeuvres as they walk through the collection of art on display from the Gropper Family private collection.

Family Storytelling Program:
“Through the Windows of Time:
Tradin’ Tales fromAround the World”
Featuring Susan Stone and Friends
Sunday, November 16th at 1:00pm
We are delighted to present nationally-known storytellers Susan Stone and Oba William King in a charming performance of “Tradin’ Tales from the Beginning of Time.” Set against the backdrop of the remarkable Gropper Windows and accompanied by drumming and music, the lively presentation will honor the long tradition of “swappin’ stories” as the performers share tales from a variety of cultural traditions. Kosher kid-friendly lunch available for purchase at noon.

Artist-in-Residence Chana Zelig
“Illumination and Inspiration”
Saturday, November 22nd
Local artist Chana Zelig will share her reflections and inspirations as a designer, painter, and Jewish artisan in a weekend-long program. Ms. Zelig will begin with remarks at Shabbat services on Saturday morning, and follow with a presentation during lunch following services. Saturday night we’ll reconvene for a discussion and workshop.

Evening program at 7:00pm

Sunday morning will bring us together with participants from the North Shore for a bus tour of art glass in the Chicago area, including Ms. Zelig’s recent installations and concluding with lunch in front of the beautiful Gropper Windows at West Suburban Temple Har Zion.
